Everyone, how you all
doing? I am back with more articles (though exactly not the articles I updated
about). So, anybody watched the recent Marvel TV show Loki? Well, I watched it and enjoyed it too. This show opened the
idea of MCM (Marvel Cinematic Multi-verse) from MCU (Marvel Cinematic
Universe). And then the word ‘multi-verse’ rang a bell in my head.
Well, the entire RRP or
Rick Riordan Presents fans know about Sal and Gabi series of which Sal and Gabi Break the Universe was featured in the Washington Post's 'KidsPost Summer Book Club'. Anyway, those who don’t know, I want you to leave this page at
once and read the book. Sal and Gabi
is filled with culture and science that every sci-fi reader will like. Rick Riordan Presents mainly publishes books filled with fantasy and magical stuffs.
But this series is though filled with fantasy, also contains scientifically
magical stuffs.
In the last interview
with the Half-Blood Report, Carlos Hernandez, the author of Sal and Gabi series confirmed that he was signed with Disney for
writing only two books. But can’t fans wish for more when there was a
cliff-hanger at the end of the last book? Well, we’re certainly going to talk
about it.
Let’s start but first
with a bit of a warning for those who still didn’t leave the page and read the
book if he/she didn’t yet read it…
Warning: This article contains spoilers from Sal and Gabi Break the Universe and Sal and Gabi Fix the Universe by Carlos Hernandez.
Part 1: What comes next?
When you read the last
sentence you’d have thought there will be book three of this series as unlike
the first book, the sentence was: “But the answer to that question is a whole
’nother story.” I also thought the same thing until I heard the mentioned
interview.
So, what the “ ’nother
story” is? Well, sentence had come in the context of FixGabi asking FixSal how
he was alive though she had seen him sacrifice himself for her. This question
can be answered by Carlos in two ways (if he would write a third book).
First, Carlos will have
to change the point of view to FixSal (though in that case he cannot be called
FixSal and it’d confuse the readers, which is good). Another way is the present
Sal will quote the whole incident: at first we’ll see Sal listening, and then
the POV will directly change to FixSal.
But I think the best to
do is giving Gabi, FixGabi or any Gabi the POV. If you read the title of the
series it says Sal and Gabi where we
also find Gabi. I won’t say that it was wrong giving Sal POV only, but giving
Gabi a POV would make the series cooler. By the way, when I was thinking of
writing a series, I also had the idea of changing POVs in each books.
But the thing is, Carlos
only signed for two books and there can’t be no way he can write any more books
… except, if Carlos renews the contract for writing a new book, in which case
the whole fandom will be happy, I mean very very happy.
Part 2: Purpose of the cliffhanger
The cliffhanger at the
end of the first book is truly something that made the fans hungrier. But it
had one thing that opened something for all of us: an opportunity to imagine.
Imagining the next plot is very fascinating.
There will be maybe
many fan-fictions that will reveal the cliffhanger, but I hope Carlos will come
up with a new book. It is actually torturous for someone like me especially
with a book that is filled with fun and stuffs. Thinking of the wide expanse
Carlos’s imagination went is truly something that holds me up to imagine the
next plot. I mean, will I be able to think of the whole thing that mixes up
with the complex tangles of multi-verse.
Rick Riordan also did
the same thing with The Tower of Nero.
It was announced earlier that The Tower of
Nero will be the last book of the ‘Camp Half-Blood Chronicles’ or the Percy
Jackson world. But in the end there was a cliffhanger with Nico and Will.
In one of ‘The Half-Blood Report’s episodes, or any of Samuel and Diego’s videos, Rick or
Carlos (I can’t remember at this moment) said that the purpose of this
cliffhanger is to give the readers a place to imagine the next. [The links to
all the episodes related to this article will be available orderly at the end.]
Part 3: Any more to look for?
Yes, there is something
the fans can obviously find, and I can assure you about that. If you’ve gone
through ‘Read Riordan’ platforms or if you’re an active Riordan fan, you can
know that there is an upcoming anthology from Rick Riordan Presents with the title:
The Curse Carnival and Other Calamities
that is filled with stories from many writers of RRP.
Among these writers you
can find Carlos Hernandez, and that’d be easily done if you just look at the
cover of this book. And the writers won’t write other stories except stories
related to their own universe. So, Sal
and Gabi fans (I am included there), I think we can at least expect a short
story related to this universe.
The short story can be
any story by Carlos, but I think it can be the “ ’nother story” Carlos
mentioned at the end of Sal and Gabi Fix
the Universe. I wonder how he’ll explain the “story” in a story not a whole
book. Well, you can expect the unexpected when it comes to Rick Riordan or Rick
Riordan Presents authors.
Part 4: Carlos’s Brilliant Exploring
Exploring the
multi-verse is somehow a hard job when you’ve to explain it and go through it
unlike the movies or shows that give you a visual or CGI effects to show the
multi-verse. But Carlos’s did an excellent job to explain it and design it in
such a way that you’d be flattered quickly.
Through the multi-verse
and its opportunities opened in Sal and
Gab series, Carlos Hernandez could explore many possibilities with various
outcomes. This opportunity is something you don’t get often, but Carlos wisely
used the chance and builds a story that’s able to contest any other multiversal
stories.
While in the present
universe Carlos explored friendship among the leading characters, Carlos found
a way to explore the romanticism among the leading characters in another
universe. But when it came to family, Carlos made a nice entanglement among the
Vidon family and family business in the wide multiverse.
Speaking of family, we
should bring the Reál family in which Gabi belongs too. Reál family is really
open-minded and its members except anyone outside in a way that you might
forget that you had a scratchy past, like Yasmany did.
He also stitched a
story filled with normal events that happens in our daily lives. Like, he
brought the fact that Iggy is sick (and very very sick). This brought a lot of
events that acted as main gears to turn the path of the story. He didn’t ignore
the daily life events, rather he emphasized in these events bringing them in a
different level to build up the story.
Carlos also brought a
whole school and the inside and outside of it. Culeco Academy doesn’t only
rival those schools that stress its students, but it encourages all to build an
education institution for children who cannot only learn but have fun while
doing it. He also highlighted several events of school and he just did a great
job in channeling various ideas of school events in all of us.
It would be a really
big article if I bring every point of Carlos’s accomplishments here, but as it
is not such thing, I have to stop here. But if anyone still dared to read till
here, I suggest you to read Sal and Gabi
series right now!
Part 5: Endless fun
Carlos is just the
right person in parties where you want to laugh out loud. Those who watched the
videos or joined the event of Making of
the Myth by Rick Riordan Presents would’ve of course known how funny Carlos
can be. Just see the second video of this event where he is… okay, find out
yourself.
So, you can obviously
guess how funny Carlos Hernandez is. His two books are really funny and full of
stuffs that will make you laugh hard. You can find toilet with class-nine
artificial intelligence, and even artificial intelligence getting married.
Each and every
materials related to Sal and Gabi series
will make you laugh (I am not only telling of smiling). Even the cover and the
character-arts are funny. If you see the latest covers for both books, you can
locate the change of Sal and Gabi’s impression to each other in both books.
I mean, wherever Carlos
is, you can of course find hundred percent laugh.
Part 6: Conclusion
Concluding this article
is a bit hard. I cannot write more except spoiling the whole plot which I
really don’t want to do even though I attached a spoiler alert at the
beginning. For most of you, it’d be just another boring Fandom article (except
if you want to get a quick reminder without reading the book).
I am really eager to
read the story with Sal and Gabi in
the upcoming anthology The Cursed
Carnival and Other Calamities and also other Riordan stories. And just
stick with Carlos in his social platforms for many more funs [link at the end].
Bye, see you soon in the next article featuring Paola Santiago and the Forest of Nightmares book by Tehlor Kay Santiago.
ACKNOWLEDGEMENT
Note: I
don’t know how successful I was writing this article, but this one is shorter
than the most. I didn’t know how I could add more info without spoiling the
whole book, but I think this article must be enough to remind you of the
upcoming anthology The Cursed Carnival
and Other Calamities from Rick Riordan Presents, and also remind you of the
fun we shared, though not directly but as readers and friends, when reading Sal and Gabi series.
And congratulation Sal and Gabi Break the Universe for being featured in Washington Post’s KidsPost
Summer Book Club.
